Japanese car maker Toyota has come up with a new technology which will now allow users to access the door-locking and engine startup functions of a car via a mobile application. According to Toyota, the innovative app called ‘Smart Key Box’, designed to work with the help of a device arranged in the interior of a car will help in monitoring car safety by allowing only authorized users to operate the car.
“This technology will help in renting and lending of cars in a more secure way. It will allow only those who have signed-up for the shared-use feature of the app to operate. For that, every user will require the permission of the car owner to get access. Also, this service will operate from a cloud-based platform to give car owners some added benefits”, Toyota said in a statement.
The Smart Key Box technology will go for the testing phase in San Francisco from January next year, as the company plans to release cars based on the intelligent engine startup systems within six months.
Having routed with a cloud-based service, private car owners can now lend or rent their cars for a specific time period when they are not using them. Hence, the app will boost peer-to-peer car sharing with a secure system of monitoring.
According to Toyota, the Smart Key Box device can be placed inside any car without making major modifications to enable car-locking and engine startup functions. In addition, the platform will also provide access to mobility services like handling loans and payments while providing software support for individual vehicle management system and leasing.
