MUMBAI: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp has for the first time crossed a benchmark of Rs 20,000 crore in its revenue, generated through the online ticketing system. The IRCTC has generated a total of Rs 20,620 crore in the last financial year, till March 2015.
The revenue generated from online ticketing has increased by 34% when compared to the revenue of the previous year, where the online platform of the Indian railways sold tickets worth Rs 15,410 crore.
Public relations manager at IRCTC, Mr Sandip Dutta said “Majority of the tickets were sold over the online platform. Improved e-ticketing facilities and setting up a very robust process in booking tickets has helped the organization to generate heavy revenue. IRCTC has upgraded to the latest technology available to provide 24/7 services to the customers. As of now 7,200 tickets can be booked per minute, unlike before when it was limited to only 2000”.
IRCTC has earlier set a record by selling 13.4 lakh tickets in one single day, in the month of April. As per the analysis of the Indian Railway Board, 55% railway tickets were sold online in the previous year.
Market analyst Ravi verma said, “Online marketing has all the advantages now -a-days. People of India are attracted to shopping online. Online shopping gives you an extra comfort when compared to the offline mode. It will be disgusting for us to wait in long queues at the railway counters, to just book a single ticket and that is the reason why this platform has been very successful”.
