Bystanders Watch as a Delhi Woman is Stubbed
There was public outcry in India after by-standers just watched as a woman was stubbed over 20 times in the country’s capital, Delhi, which eventually led to her death.
The victim, Karuna, was a 22-year-old school teacher. According to CCTV footage, she is approached by a motorbike man who kills her during the attack.
People walk by and others watch as he kicks and stubs her repeatedly. He then took a stone and hit her on the head.
After he killed her, the attacker attempted to run and that’s when the locals intervened. The man was captured and forwarded to the police where he is being charged with murder.
As the attack went on, one man attempted to help out but he backs off after being threatened. He is then seeing leaving the scene. Many others stood to watch what was happening but did not intervene to assist.
The police said that she was attacked at around 9am while she walked with her cousin. The attacker liked her but she did not pay attention to him because he was already married.
Local media quoted the victim’s brother who said that their family had filed a complaint against him for constantly harassing his sister.
The police deputy commissioner earlier on said that “the family had lodged a complaint four-five months back and both the families had reached a compromise”.
The public was angered by the fact that many just watched as the attacker went on. Indians took it to Twitter with one Indian Hotel Center saying:
“Shocked to see the brutal murder of a girl in Burari. (She) was stabbed by knife more than 20 times. What happened to humanity?”
@Sandeep on the other hand said “Not one bystander intervened. (That’s) horrible.”
This is the second Indian stubbing case by an alleged stalker within two days.
On Sunday evening, 28-year-old Laxmi was stabbed to death in front of her house in full view of her neighbours by a man who then killed himself.
Recent times have seen many organizations protest against violence committed on women, especially after a woman was gang raped by the same group the second time. This has led to the establishment of stringent laws that are targeted at combating these attacks.
However, instances of violence against women continue to emerge all over the country.
