People tend to assume that Apple makes its iPhone with perfection and that it cannot land into trouble. That is the same assumption that was extended to the newly released iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the exciting iPhone XR. However, there seems to be trouble in paradise.
Recently released information indicates that one of the iPhones is not working as it has been advertised. This is despite the fact that all these devices have designs which resembles the iPhone X in addition to a wide range of other hidden upgrades.
While speaking to The Verge, Verizon stated that the newly integrated dual sim functionality could in some cases fail to deliver the required 4G or even 3G, forcing its customers to use the boring and outdated 2G.
The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR have all been fitted with the dual sim functionality, Apple’s efforts to make this feature in its future smartphones.
According to Verizon, if a customer inserts a Verizon sim card and then adds a primary sim through eSIM slot, this individual is more likely to get stuck on the carrier’s legacy 2G CDMA network services.
A statement released by the firm read: “If you are a Verizon customer and you activate another carrier’s service on your iPhone’s eSIM, your Verizon service will be degraded due to the current software configuration.”
As a result of this hitch, Verizon announced that it was suspending the service given that it affected its own customers as well as customers with iPhones on other networks.
As at the moment, carriers haven’t commented on the claim by Verizon by it can be quite frustrating to be denied the pleasure of enjoying home/travel or home/work phone numbers on a single sim.
US carriers don’t support dual SIM
As much as iPhone has now been developed with the ability to have dual SIM, the three major U.S. carriers, namely AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, are yet to support the feature. Apple’s technology has been designed in such a manner that there is a primary physical SIM and a secondary virtual SIM which you are able to set up as another line.
According to PCMag, Verizon (which is the largest of the three companies) seems to have the biggest issues lying ahead.
The publication goes ahead to cite numerous people familiar with the matter in order to highlight a number of limitations to Apple’s solution.
As at the moment, when you add a Verizon account to the virtual SIM, it is downgraded to 2G CDMA which is incapable of sending MMS, leave alone major tech like FaceTime or any data intensive activity.
Data released by Verizon indicates that 30% of its cell sites are LTE-only. This implies that users would experience significant coverage once the support is rolled out.
We expect the drawbacks to hold for quite some time until a solution is developed. Verizon says that it’s working on the solution in conjunction with Apple.
“Based on our discussions with Apple, we believe these concerns will be resolved quickly and you should be able to add our great Verizon service on your secondary line before the end of the year,” Verizon said in a statement.
After the issue has been mitigated, Verizon will make it possible for their customers to enjoy the dual SIM functionality on their iPhones for two simultaneous Verizon lines.
T-Mobile also announced that its developing the required software that would support this feature and this would be enabled after the software has been rolled out.
The official position of AT&T on the dual SIM matter is yet to be known but according to MacRumors, the feature is not supported at the moment.
